TARGET AUDIENCE:
Federal, state and local emergency public safety, law enforcement,
emergency response, nurses, emergency medical (including hospital emergency facilities), and related personnel,
agencies, and authorities.
FOCUS: Define pediatric terrorism, recognize the unique characteristics of children, recognize lack of supplies, equipment and training, know the "Rule of Nines", appreciate the ways children differ from adults in diagnosis and treatment.
FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Sandra Herr, M.D. Formerly Department of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Currently Pediatric Emergency Medicine Faculty, Kosair Children's Hospital, Louisville, KY.
Kathy Adams, RN, BSN from Eastern Kentucky University. Ms. Adams has reviewed numerous terrorism response and preparedness courses developed at the University of Kentucky.
OBJECTIVES: Review the potential terrorist weapons, including the most likely agents in each class, identify the characteristics that make children more susceptible to the various forms of terrorism, review the recognition, evaluation and management of pediatric victims of terrorist incidents, discuss the various specific agents of terrorism, including the mechanisms of injury or illness, expected signs and symptoms, and evaluation and treatment of victims.
