Major Accomplishments 1996 – 1999

  1. Training: Goals for every year have been surpassed. More than 1400 healthcare providers have received training in 71 courses conducted across the state.
  2. PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): 521 people trained, including 95 instructors who will carry this work forward.

    NCEMSC (North Carolina EMSC): 597 people trained, including 27 instructors.

    PEP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers): 313 people trained, including 34 instructors who will assist in continued teaching of this course.

    APLS (Advanced Pediatric Life Support): three courses given and well received.

  3. Evaluation of training initiated through retesting of PALS.
  4. Standardized pediatric protocols for ALS and BLS ambulance services created, approved by EMS council, and disseminated.
  5. Technical Assistance Group established.
  6. Participated in development of Trauma Systems Plan for the state.
  7. With support from Mary Lou Marzian, the sponsor, assisted in preparation and passage of HB 249, the EMSC Bill, which establishes a permanent EMSC program within the state office of EMS, 1998.
  8. Establishment of network of reporting trauma registries within and surrounding Kentucky, including West Virginia, Ohio and Tennessee.
  9. Two-year surveillance of more than 150 families of severely injured children (including spinal cord and brain) in progress.
  10. Awarded EMSC Targeted Issues grant 8/99 to address unmet educational/mental health support needs identified by families of severely injured children.
