Equipment Dealers' Perceptions of a Community-based Rollover Protective Structure Promotion Campaign

Journal of Rural Health 2001; 17(2) 131-139.Farming is one of the most hazardous occupations and tractor overturns are the leading cause of agricultural fatalities. This community based injury intervention was designed to increase the number of Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) and seatbelts on tractors and promote safe operation of farm tractors in two counties. Equipment dealers who sell retro-fit ROPS kits to farmers were a critical component of the intervention initiative. During a 31 month period, over 70 ROPS were sold. Interviews were conducted with dealers at the end of the three year project to understand their perceptions, what difficulties they experienced as a result of the project and how a similar project could be improved. Comments were analyzed in relation to social science theories. This study concludes with recommendations for designers of community-based interventions beyond the ROPS project described here.
